Lagos Seals Access Bank Over Illegal Waste Discharge, Cites Public Health Risk
The Lagos State Government has shut down a branch of Access Bank Plc situated on Land Bridge Avenue, Oniru, Victoria Island, for allegedly discharging untreated faecal waste into public drainage channels.
The enforcement action was executed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) following a whistleblower report that prompted a joint inspection of the facility.
According to officials, the bank’s premises was found to be releasing untreated sewage into nearby drains, causing offensive odour and contributing to environmental pollution in breach of state sanitation regulations.
Authorities described the incident as a grave public health concern, warning that such practices could endanger residents and compromise ongoing environmental protection efforts across Lagos.
The premises was sealed during a late-night operation, with officials noting that further sanctions would be imposed in accordance with applicable environmental laws.
The state government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, stressing that all offenders—regardless of corporate status—will be held accountable.
