TB Joshua: The enduring mystery of a controversial but influential cleric

Five years after the passing of Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as TB Joshua, debates about his life, ministry and legacy continue to evoke strong emotions among followers, admirers and critics alike.

For many who encountered him directly or indirectly, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) remains a figure whose impact transcended conventional religious boundaries. To his supporters, he was more than a preacher; he was a spiritual leader whose influence reached millions across continents through his teachings, humanitarian outreach and widely publicised healing and prophetic ministries.

One of such admirers, Madam Florence Olowokere, recalls how her perception of the late cleric changed after his death.

According to her, seeing the late prophet lying in state prompted deep personal reflection about some of the views she had previously held concerning him.

She believes that people should exercise caution in forming opinions about religious leaders without personal conviction or spiritual understanding. For her, the experience became a lesson in humility, self-examination and faith.

Her testimony reflects a broader phenomenon that often accompanies the passing of influential figures: a renewed assessment of their contributions and significance.

TB Joshua's ministry was marked by extraordinary popularity and equally extraordinary controversy. Throughout his lifetime, he attracted a global following that included worshippers, political leaders, celebrities and visitors from different religious backgrounds.

His services drew thousands to Lagos, while his television broadcasts reached audiences in numerous countries. His messages frequently centred on faith, prayer, forgiveness, humility and dependence on God.

Supporters often point to his humanitarian activities as one of the defining features of his ministry. Through various charitable initiatives, assistance was reportedly extended to widows, orphans, disaster victims, prisoners, students and vulnerable individuals within and outside Nigeria.

His followers maintain that his commitment to philanthropy reflected the practical application of Christian teachings and demonstrated concern for the less privileged.

Perhaps no aspect of his ministry generated more discussion than his prophetic declarations and healing services. Admirers viewed these as evidence of divine grace at work, while sceptics questioned many of the claims surrounding them. Yet, regardless of differing opinions, few would dispute the enormous attention these activities attracted across the world.

Another distinguishing feature often highlighted by supporters was his emphasis on love and reconciliation. TB Joshua repeatedly encouraged Christians to place greater importance on their relationship with God than on denominational differences.

He frequently advocated unity among believers and stressed the importance of forgiveness, compassion and peaceful coexistence.

Many followers describe him as a man of simple tastes despite his global fame. They recall a leader who appeared more interested in spiritual growth and humanitarian service than in material display.

To them, his teachings challenged believers to examine their personal relationship with God and to express their faith through acts of kindness and integrity.

His influence also extended beyond the walls of the church. Over the years, he became a prominent figure in discussions about religion, spirituality and the role of faith in addressing societal challenges. His interventions in humanitarian crises and support for distressed individuals further strengthened his public profile.

Following his death in June 2021, tributes poured in from different parts of the world. Admirers celebrated what they considered a life devoted to service, prayer and the advancement of Christian values.

Today, many of those followers believe that his legacy remains visible through the continued activities of SCOAN under the leadership of Pastor Evelyn Joshua, who has sought to sustain the vision and programmes associated with her late husband.

As commemorations mark the fifth anniversary of his passing, supporters across the globe continue to remember him through prayers, thanksgiving services and reflections on his contributions to their lives.

Whether viewed as a remarkable spiritual leader, a controversial religious figure, or a complex personality whose influence defied easy categorisation, TB Joshua remains one of the most discussed clerics in contemporary African Christianity.

His story continues to inspire devotion, provoke debate and invite reflection on the enduring relationship between faith, leadership and human experience.
