IGP Disu Launches Nationwide Online Campaign to Tackle Cybercrime

Police unveil ‘Real Odogwu No Dey Hide Face’ initiative to boost digital security, warn Nigerians against identity theft, romance scams and other online fraud

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has announced the launch of a nationwide online awareness campaign aimed at combating the growing threat of cybercrime and promoting responsible digital behaviour among Nigerians.

The initiative, themed “Real Odogwu No Dey Hide Face,” is designed to educate citizens on how to protect themselves online while strengthening public vigilance against internet-related crimes.

According to the IGP, the campaign will run across digital platforms for one month and will focus on informing Nigerians about emerging cyber threats, safe online practices, and the importance of safeguarding personal information.

Disu noted that cybercrime continues to evolve rapidly, posing serious risks to individuals, businesses, and institutions, hence the need for continuous public awareness and collaboration.

The programme is being coordinated through the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, where experts are engaging the public with educational content on common internet fraud tactics and prevention strategies.

The Director of the centre, Ifeanyi Uche Henry, explained that cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting digital platforms to perpetrate crimes such as identity theft, romance scams, business email compromise, phishing attacks, and sextortion.

He stressed that many of these crimes succeed because victims unknowingly expose personal information online or fail to verify suspicious messages and requests.

The police leadership therefore urged Nigerians to remain cautious when sharing personal details on the internet, avoid suspicious links, and verify online communications before responding.

IGP Disu also acknowledged the support of international partners working with the Nigeria Police Force in the fight against cybercrime, emphasizing that global cooperation remains crucial in addressing digital threats that transcend national borders.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the police to strengthening cybercrime investigations while encouraging citizens to play their part by practicing responsible online behaviour.

The police further advised members of the public to stay cyber-aware, verify online information, and take necessary steps to secure their digital identities.
