Delta Police Roll Out Statewide Security Clampdown, Expand Patrols and Emergency Response Lines

The Delta State Police Command has unveiled a sweeping set of operational directives aimed at tightening security across the state, boosting public safety, and strengthening rapid response systems. 

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command said the measures follow a comprehensive review of the security landscape under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi. The initiative aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, mandating commands nationwide to intensify visibility policing, adopt intelligence-driven strategies, and deepen community engagement.

As part of the renewed strategy, the Command has commenced large-scale deployment of personnel across all nine Area Commands, divisions, and other critical locations. Residents are expected to notice increased stop-and-search operations along major highways, entry and exit routes, and identified flashpoints, alongside sustained day and night patrols and joint operations with other security agencies.

The Police also outlined key operational priorities, including the protection of lives and property, maintenance of law and order, prevention of unlawful gatherings, and disruption of criminal networks. Authorities say intelligence-led raids will be intensified in known black spots and criminal hideouts, while community-based intelligence gathering will be strengthened.

Special attention is being directed at tackling kidnapping and related crimes in identified flashpoints such as Owa-Oyibu, Ogwashi-Uku power line axis, Okpanam, Ashaka, Ovwero in Ughelli North, Umunede, Igbodo, Idumusa, and Ute, as well as border communities. The Command said these targeted operations are designed to flush out criminal elements, restore public confidence, and secure key corridors across the state.

In a move to deepen collaboration with residents, all Area Commanders have been directed to convene stakeholders’ town hall meetings within their jurisdictions. The engagements are expected to enhance trust, improve intelligence flow, and promote joint efforts in tackling security challenges.

It also highlighted dedicated Complaint Response Unit (CRU) lines for reporting police misconduct and rights violations, assuring that all complaints will be handled confidentially and promptly.

Reassuring residents of its commitment, the Police emphasized its resolve to uphold its constitutional mandate while urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could trigger panic. Parents and guardians were also advised to monitor their wards, as community leaders, transport unions, and other stakeholders were called upon to support ongoing security efforts.

The Command further stressed that officers have been adequately briefed to carry out their duties with professionalism, respect for human rights, and zero tolerance for misconduct.
