UK Crime Agency Seizes One Tonne of Cocaine at London Port, Launches International Probe
Operatives of the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency have opened a major investigation after authorities intercepted nearly one tonne of cocaine at a major London shipping terminal.
The illicit consignment was discovered on Friday, March 20, at the London Gateway port during a routine cargo inspection carried out by Border Force officers.
According to officials, the container had arrived from Panama and was officially declared to contain ceramics and kitchenware destined for Norway. However, further checks revealed several holdalls hidden inside the shipment, containing shrink-wrapped packages suspected to be cocaine.
Investigators estimate that the seized drugs could have fetched up to £80 million if distributed on the streets, making it one of the significant interceptions recorded at the port in recent times.
Senior investigating officer Paul Orchard of the National Crime Agency praised the operation, noting that the seizure dealt a heavy financial blow to the criminal network behind the shipment.
He explained that preliminary findings suggest the United Kingdom may not have been the final destination of the drugs, adding that authorities are now working with international partners to trace the trafficking route and identify those responsible.
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to dismantle the organised crime group linked to the smuggling attempt.
