Lagos Police Arrest Man over Alleged Sale of Sister’s One-Month-Old Baby for N2m ………Suspect claims financial hardship and mother’s burial expenses pushed him into the act
The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old man over allegations that he sold his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million.
The suspect, who lives in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu, was arrested after the baby’s mother reported the matter to the police.
Police authorities confirmed that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti for detailed investigation.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to arranging the sale, explaining that severe financial difficulties and the need to fund their late mother’s burial influenced his decision.
According to his account, he connected with a woman seeking to adopt a child through Facebook. After discussions, he was asked to bring the baby to the Mile 2 area of Lagos where a man acting on behalf of the buyer collected the child.
He claimed that shortly after handing over the baby, the woman transferred N2 million to his bank account. The suspect said he later gave his sister N500,000 while the remaining money was used to organise their mother’s burial.
However, the situation reportedly took a different turn after the burial when the child’s mother demanded the return of her baby and accused him of manipulating her into agreeing to the arrangement.
The complaint eventually led to his arrest by the police.
The suspect also told investigators that he did not personally know the woman who allegedly bought the child and had no information about her address, adding that attempts to reach her through the phone number used during the transaction have since failed.
Speaking on the development, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
He stated that the suspect would face prosecution once the inquiry is concluded.
Police authorities reiterated their determination to crack down on child trafficking and other criminal activities across Lagos State, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could assist law enforcement in tackling crime.
