Tears and Salutes in Maiduguri as Fallen Soldiers Laid to Rest After North-East Counter-Insurgency Battle
An atmosphere of grief and deep respect filled the military cemetery inside Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri on Friday as the Nigerian Armed Forces buried soldiers who lost their lives during ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
The solemn ceremony brought together military commanders, government representatives and grieving relatives who gathered to honour the courage and sacrifice of the fallen troops.
Leading the burial rites, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, paid tribute to the deceased soldiers, describing them as patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Nigeria’s unity and security.
Speaking during the ceremony, the commander reflected on the realities of military service, noting that while victories bring pride, the loss of comrades reminds the nation of the heavy price paid by those who defend it.
He said the soldiers displayed exceptional bravery, loyalty and dedication while confronting insurgents threatening peace in the North-East.
According to him, the loss extends beyond the immediate families of the fallen troops, affecting the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces and the entire country.
“They stood for something greater than themselves — the safety of the nation, the protection of its citizens and the ideals they swore to defend,” he said.
Abubakar noted that the soldiers died while actively participating in counter-terrorism operations aimed at restoring stability to communities affected by years of insurgency.
He commended their resilience, adding that troops deployed in the region often operate under extremely difficult conditions while striving to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
Their sacrifice, he said, serves as a reminder that national freedom and security often come at a heavy cost.
The commander assured the bereaved families that the military leadership would ensure the timely processing of benefits and entitlements due to the deceased personnel in order to support their loved ones.
Representatives of the Borno State Government also attended the ceremony to show solidarity with the armed forces and the families of the fallen soldiers.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Ali Yabe, described the deaths as a painful loss not only to the military but also to the nation as a whole.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by troops stationed in the North-East and praised their commitment to protecting civilians and defending the country from insurgent threats.
Yabe reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the military in its efforts to restore peace and stability across the region.
He also expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased soldiers, noting that their loved ones died while serving a noble cause.
The ceremony drew senior officers from the Theatre Command Headquarters and the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, alongside local government officials and community leaders who came to pay their respects.
For many of the relatives present, the moment was filled with mixed emotions — pride in the bravery of their loved ones and deep sorrow over their loss.
Some family members stood quietly beside the graves, while others wiped away tears as the final rites were performed.
The military burial followed long-standing traditions observed when honouring soldiers who fall in active service.
As the ceremony progressed, buglers sounded the traditional farewell while soldiers fired ceremonial volleys into the air — a final salute reserved for those who died in the line of duty.
The sound of the bugle echoed across the cemetery, marking the final goodbye to men who dedicated their lives to protecting the country.
Military officials noted that the fallen troops were part of the ongoing operations against insurgent groups operating in parts of the North-East.
The region has witnessed more than a decade of conflict involving terrorist groups that have carried out attacks on communities, security forces and public institutions.
Despite the challenges, security forces have continued operations aimed at dismantling insurgent networks, protecting civilians and restoring normal life to affected communities.
Operation Hadin Kai, the joint military task force leading the fight against insurgency in the region, has been at the forefront of these efforts.
The command coordinates operations involving the Nigerian Army, Air Force and other security agencies working together to combat terrorist activities.
Military authorities say the courage and dedication displayed by troops in the theatre of operations remain central to ongoing efforts to defeat insurgency and secure the region.
For the families left behind, however, the ceremony was a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by their loved ones.
Yet many expressed pride that the fallen soldiers served their country with honour and courage.
As the ceremony concluded, military leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the fight against insurgency, insisting that the sacrifices of the fallen would not be in vain.
According to the commanders present, the bravery demonstrated by the deceased soldiers will inspire their colleagues still on the frontlines to remain resolute in defending the nation.
The burial ended with a quiet moment of reflection as attendees stood in silence beside the freshly covered graves.
For the military and the families of the fallen troops, the solemn gathering served both as a farewell and a promise — that their sacrifice will continue to strengthen Nigeria’s determination to achieve lasting peace in the North-Ea
