Nigeria, Spain Strengthen Naval Ties as Spanish Warship Visits Lagos
Naval cooperation between Nigeria and Spain has received a boost following a high-level courtesy visit to the Western Naval Command (WNC) headquarters in Lagos.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, hosted the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria and the Benin Republic, Felix Costales Artieda, alongside the Commanding Officer of Spanish Navy Ship BAM Furor, Angel Garcia Estrada, and their delegation.
The visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and boosting maritime security collaboration, underscoring growing naval ties between both nations.
Speaking during the engagement, Estrada expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed the Spanish Navy’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the Nigerian Navy. Ambassador Artieda also highlighted the strong relationship between Spain, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and Nigeria, reiterating Spain’s support for maritime security initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea.
In his response, the FOC, representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, said the visit reflects a shared commitment to naval diplomacy and international cooperation. He commended Spain’s continued presence in the Gulf of Guinea, noting its alignment with regional maritime security frameworks.
As part of the programme, a briefing on the Combined Maritime Task Force in the Gulf of Guinea was delivered, followed by an interactive session among participants.
The Spanish Navy Ship BAM Furor is on a port visit to Lagos from April 7 to 12, 2026, and is expected to participate in joint exercises with the Nigerian Navy to enhance operational synergy and interoperability.
The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph.
