Lagos: 2 dead, 3 injured as dangote mixer truck crushes vehicles at iyana meiran

A horrific road accident claimed two lives and left three others critically injured on Wednesday at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, Lagos. The disaster, which occurred near the Meiran Primary Health Centre (PHC), involved a Dangote Silo Mixer truck that reportedly suffered a mechanical failure.

According to a statement released by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA December 17, 2025, the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the collision

“Preliminary investigations by traffic officials revealed that the Dangote truck was travelling at an "inordinately high speed" when it suffered a sudden brake failure. The out-of-control heavy-duty vehicle rammed into several smaller vehicles along the corridor, including a commercial mini-bus (Korope) with registration number EPP 541 YF, four tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP”

“The violent impact left the smaller vehicles mangled, trapping several commuters within the twisted wreckage” Adebayo stated.

He noted that, LASTMA personnel, supported by public-spirited bystanders, carried out a swift rescue operation. Three victims were extricated from the crushed vehicles in critical condition and were expeditiously conveyed to Mobonke Hospital on Meiran Road for intensive medical care.

Regrettably, two persons were confirmed dead at the scene. Their remains were handed over to officers from the Meiran Police Division, led personally by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who provided security reinforcement during the operation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a full recovery. He condemned the incident as avoidable, citing mechanical negligence and excessive speeding as persistent threats to public safety.

"Motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, have a critical obligation to ensure their braking systems and vital components are thoroughly certified roadworthy before embarking on any journey," Bakare-Oki stated.

The Agency reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and urged all road users to prioritize vehicle maintenance to prevent further loss of life on Lagos roads.
