EFCC Busts Alleged ‘Yahoo Academy’ in Abuja, Arrests 31 Suspects
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered an alleged cybercrime training centre in Karu, Abuja, leading to the arrest of 31 suspected internet fraudsters.
In a statement released on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the anti-graft agency disclosed that the suspects were apprehended at Becki Estate during a sting operation. According to the commission, those arrested include two suspected masterminds and several trainees undergoing what it described as internet fraud tutorials.
The EFCC reported that various items were recovered from the location, including mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic devices believed to have been used in the illicit activities.
Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the recruits were allegedly enticed from Benue State with promises of legitimate job opportunities. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly initiated into cybercrime operations.
The agency further stated that the trainees were housed within the facility and had their movements strictly controlled. It added that their communication with the outside world was curtailed, as their personal mobile phones were allegedly confiscated.
According to the EFCC, the environment within the facility was harsh, with reports of physical punishment meted out to those who failed to comply with instructions.
The commission confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that all suspects will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the inquiry.
