Defence Minister Visits OPHK, Commends Troops, Reaffirms FG’s Commitment to Crushing Terrorism

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, alongside the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, on 31 March 2026 undertook a high-level operational visit to the Headquarters Theatre Command, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri, Borno State. 

The visit was aimed at assessing ongoing military operations, reinforcing the Federal Government’s resolve to defeat terrorism, and engaging critical stakeholders in the North East theatre of operations.

The Ministers commenced their visit with a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno at his palace, where they paid homage and commended the traditional institution for its unwavering support to the Armed Forces and counter-insurgency efforts. They also acknowledged the resilience of the people of the region and reiterated the Federal Government’s continued commitment to restoring peace and stability.

Subsequently, the delegation proceeded to the Borno State Government House, where they were received by the Deputy Governor on behalf of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. The Deputy Governor conveyed the appreciation of the state government and its people for the sacrifices of troops and sustained federal support. In response, the Ministers assured of intensified military operations and strengthened collaboration with the state government to further enhance security.

In a solemn moment of remembrance, the Ministers visited the Military Cemetery in Maiduguri, where they laid wreaths in honour of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation. The gesture underscored the country’s enduring gratitude and commitment to the welfare and legacy of its gallant troops.

At the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI, the Ministers received a comprehensive operational briefing from the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar. He highlighted key achievements recorded in recent operations, including the neutralisation of over 280 terrorist elements during the Ramadan period, the disruption of insurgent logistics networks, and the rescue of abducted civilians. He further assured the Ministers of the high morale, professionalism, and unwavering determination of troops to decisively defeat terrorism in the North East.

Addressing journalists, the Honourable Minister of Defence praised the Armed Forces for their resilience and operational successes, noting that recent gains reflect improved coordination and professionalism. He reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to decisively tackle insecurity and restore lasting peace across the country.

The visit also featured the inspection of a newly constructed Military Command and Control Centre, designed to enhance intelligence gathering, operational coordination, and real-time decision-making. In addition, the Ministers commissioned newly built family accommodation for troops, an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Defence to improve personnel welfare and boost morale.

In their address to troops, the Ministers conveyed the President’s deep appreciation for their courage, sacrifice, and dedication. They urged personnel to sustain the current operational momentum and remain resolute in denying terrorists freedom of action across the theatre.

The visit concluded on a high note, with troops expressing renewed confidence and motivation, reaffirming their commitment to achieving total victory.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria, through Operation HADIN KAI, remain steadfast in sustaining coordinated land and air operations, consolidating gains, and working in synergy with stakeholders to ensure the complete defeat of terrorism and the restoration of enduring peace in the North East.
