Cybercrime Cases Increasing in India, Judiciary Calls for Stronger Collaboration
Cybercrime incidents in India are rising sharply, with over 86,000 cases recorded in 2023, according to Judge Nelson Sailo of the Gauhati High Court. He made this known during a cybercrime training programme held in Aizawl, stressing the need for better coordination among security agencies and the judiciary to address the growing threat.
Justice Sailo noted that the recognition of the Right to Privacy judgment as a fundamental right by the Supreme Court of India led to stronger data protection efforts, including the passage of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, aimed at safeguarding citizens’ personal information in the digital age.
Speaking on the situation in Mizoram, the judge said hundreds of cybercrime cases have been reported in recent years, with offences such as financial fraud, social media impersonation, and online harassment among the most common. He advised the public to take preventive measures, including using antivirus software, avoiding suspicious downloads, and reporting unusual online activity to law-enforcement authorities.
Another High Court judge, Michael Zothankhuma, described cybercrime as a global challenge that often evolves faster than existing laws. He stressed that effective response requires close cooperation between the police, legal institutions, and other government agencies, along with increased public awareness.
Also speaking at the event, Sharad Agarwal said modern technologies such as artificial intelligence are increasingly being misused for phishing, deepfake creation, password theft, and malware attacks. He explained that the state police have introduced technical support units and digital forensic tools to strengthen investigations.
Officials at the programme agreed that while technology has improved everyday life, it has also created new opportunities for criminal activity, making stronger collaboration between law-enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and the public essential in tackling cybercrim
