Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have foiled a coordinated attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists in Goniri, Yobe State, killing more than 20 insurgents during a fierce overnight confrontation.

The troops, operating under Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force (North East), came under heavy attack late Monday night, March 9, 2026, as terrorists launched assaults from multiple directions in what appeared to be an attempt to surround the military formation stationed in Goniri.

According to military authorities, the advancing insurgents were detected early through surveillance systems as they moved simultaneously from the Goniri village axis and the Ngamdu junction corridor. The troops reportedly responded swiftly, engaging the attackers with coordinated firepower and defensive tactics that prevented the terrorists from breaching the position.

Reinforcements were immediately deployed to the area, while the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided close air support, striking the advancing insurgents and weakening their combat strength.

During the exchange of gunfire, the troops overpowered the attackers, forcing them to retreat with heavy losses. Military sources confirmed that more than 20 terrorists were neutralised in the operation, including a senior commander identified as Abu Yusu, said to be the Munzir of Dursula.

After the failed assault, troops conducted a sweep of the battlefield and recovered several bodies along with weapons abandoned by the fleeing insurgents. Items recovered include machine guns, AK-47 rifles, improvised explosive devices, bombs, and different calibres of ammunition.

Follow-up clearance operations carried out in the Gwaigomari area within the Timbuktu Triangle also led to the discovery of additional terrorist casualties during patrols that continued into the early hours of Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Some soldiers were injured during the encounter but were promptly evacuated for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Military authorities confirmed that the Goniri location remains under firm control of Operation HADIN KAI forces. Ground troops, supported by air assets, have continued aggressive pursuit operations in surrounding communities where some wounded terrorists are believed to have escaped.

The Military High Command praised the troops for their courage and determination, reiterating that Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to defeating terrorism and restoring peace across the North-East region.
