Tragedy in Ikot Abasi: Nigerian Army Probes Death of 13-Year-Old Timothy Daniel
The Headquarters 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army has officially launched a high-level investigation into the "unfortunate incident" that led to the death of a minor, Timothy Daniel, in the Ette Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The incident, which occurred on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, has sparked concerns within the local community, prompting the military to issue a formal statement regarding the ongoing probe.
In a statement signed by Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the military confirmed that standard procedures have been activated to establish the facts surrounding the teenager's death.
The Army has appealed to the public and social media commentators to avoid speculation that could hinder the integrity of the process.
"The investigation is currently ongoing, and no findings or conclusions have been reached at this stage. Accordingly, the Nigerian Army urges the general public to refrain from speculation or commentary that may prejudice the investigative process." Captain Lawal Bala
The 2 Brigade reiterated that the Nigerian Army operates under strict Rules of Engagement (ROE) and that the outcome of the investigation will be made public in compliance with extant laws and military regulations.
The Nigerian Army expressed its sincere sympathy to the family of the 13-year-old.
"The Nigerian Army expresses its sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Timothy Daniel and commiserates with them over his loss. We pray for the repose of his soul," the statement added.
