OPL 245: Atiku, AGF Trade Words Over Status of Oil Block Dispute
A renewed disagreement has surfaced over the status of the long-running OPL 245 oil block case, as former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, challenged recent remarks by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
The controversy follows comments attributed to the AGF suggesting that criticisms of the reported settlement are driven by personal interests rather than national concern. However, Atiku rejected that position, insisting that objections to the deal are based on documented evidence and ongoing legal proceedings.
In a statement released by his media office, the former vice president argued that questions surrounding the OPL 245 resolution stem from verifiable records, including legal notices and court actions. According to him, some stakeholders have raised concerns about the process, noting they were not involved in negotiations and that related cases are still before the courts.
He described the claim that critics are acting out of self-interest as misleading, adding that raising issues backed by evidence is a legitimate responsibility in a democratic system.
Atiku also clarified that he has no personal stake in the oil block, stressing that his intervention is motivated by public interest and the need for transparency, due process, and adherence to the rule of law.
The OPL 245 asset, considered one of Nigeria’s most valuable oil blocks, has for years been at the centre of complex legal battles and international scrutiny.
Responding to the concerns, Fagbemi maintained that the settlement remains valid and defended the government’s position. He referenced a recent judgment in a case involving Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited and Malabu Oil & Gas Limited, where the court dismissed a challenge to the oil block allocation on legal grounds, describing it as statute-barred and an abuse of court process.
The Attorney-General further argued that continued opposition to the resolution raises questions about the motives behind such criticism, suggesting it may be aimed at obstructing a lawful outcome that could benefit the country.
Despite the differing positions, calls for greater transparency and accountability continue to dominate the conversation, with observers noting that the matter remains sensitive and closely watched.
