ICPC Tracks N21.23 Trillion Projects to Strengthen Accountability in Public Spending
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has revealed that it monitored projects worth over N21.23 trillion under the Federal Ministry of Works, as part of its ongoing efforts to curb corruption and promote transparency in government expenditure.
This disclosure was made by ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), during a stakeholders’ workshop held in Abuja in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists. The event focused on reviewing and strengthening the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (2022–2026), with emphasis on the role of the media.
Aliyu explained that the commission has continued to prioritise preventive measures, particularly through its Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative, which focuses on ensuring that public funds are effectively utilised.
According to him, in recent monitoring phases, the commission tracked approximately 950 projects spread across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with a combined value of about N415.25 billion.
He noted that the exercise uncovered several abandoned and poorly executed projects, prompting contractors to return to sites and improve delivery. The initiative, he added, has also enhanced accountability and strengthened oversight in public service execution.
The ICPC chairman emphasised that project tracking remains a critical preventive mechanism designed to ensure value for money and discourage corrupt practices before they occur.
He reiterated that the commission’s oversight efforts are aimed at ensuring that government spending translates into meaningful and visible benefits for citizens.
