ICPC Clarifies Court Proceedings on Detention of Nasir El-Rufai, Denies Seeking Fresh Remand Order
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has issued a statement to clarify the legal status surrounding the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai, following reports suggesting the Commission requested a new extension of his remand in court.
In a press statement dated March 17, 2026, the anti-corruption agency said its appearance in court in Abuja was not to seek a fresh detention order, but to respond to an application filed by El-Rufai’s legal team challenging an earlier court decision that renewed his remand.
According to the Commission, John Okor Odey, Head, Media and Public Communication, ICPC, the application filed on March 6, 2026, sought to overturn a remand order granted on March 5, 2026. During the court session, the defence counsel was served with the Commission’s response and subsequently requested more time to prepare a reply. The Magistrate handling the case then adjourned the matter until March 31, 2026.
The ICPC explained that the former governor remains in custody based on an existing court order, stressing that the detention followed due legal process. The agency said the initial remand order allowed investigators to hold the suspect for 14 days while probing allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. After the first period expired, the court approved another 14-day extension to enable investigators to conclude their work.
The Commission also noted that a previous attempt by the defence to overturn an earlier remand order was dismissed by the court, adding that all actions taken so far comply with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
ICPC further stated that it remains committed to carrying out its responsibilities within the law and will not engage in media trials, emphasizing that legal disputes should be resolved in court rather than through public speculation.
The agency urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports as the investigation continues.
