U.S. Court Jails Former Orthodontist 60 Years for Online Exploitation of Children

A 44-year-old man, Thomas Shannon, formerly of Byron Center, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted of multiple offences involving the online sexual exploitation of minors, according to investigators from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Officials said the sentence was handed down on February 23 following a long-running investigation involving federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.

Authorities stated that the case began after a 16-year-old victim in North Carolina reported being exploited through the social media platform Snapchat. Investigators traced the account to Shannon, who at the time worked as an orthodontist in Grandville, Michigan.

According to investigators, forensic analysis of his online accounts led to the identification of at least 18 victims between the ages of 12 and 17. Officials said one of the victims later came forward independently, alleging that the suspect contacted her through another online application while he was already facing related state charges.

Authorities also revealed that part of the criminal case involved the seizure of property, including a yacht located in Ottawa County, which was forfeited during the prosecution.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey of HSI Detroit said protecting children remains a core mission of the agency, adding that the case showed the importance of cooperation between law-enforcement partners in identifying victims and bringing offenders to justice.

U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey described the crimes as deeply harmful to the victims and said prosecutors will continue to pursue lengthy prison terms in cases involving the exploitation of minors.

Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young noted that the investigation involved coordinated work by multiple agencies, including HSI Grand Rapids, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Fuquay-Varina Police Department, and Prince George’s County Police Department, under the federal initiative known as Project Safe Childhood, which focuses on combating child exploitation.
