Nigerian Army Denies Mutiny Rumors; Reaffirms Loyalty and Enhanced Welfare Reforms

The Nigerian Army has officially debunked reports circulating online alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over salary and allowance grievances. In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, January 19, 2026, the Army labeled the reports as "deliberately sensational" and an attempt to undermine national security.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, emphasized that mutiny remains a grave offense under military law and is entirely alien to the professional ethos of the Nigerian Army.

To provide clarity on the ongoing debate regarding troop earnings, the Army clarified that military pay is not determined by a single factor. Instead, it is a consolidated package designed to compensate for the unique risks and responsibilities of the profession.

The base pay determined by rank and specific to personnel engaged in active combat or internal security duties.

For troops deployed in difficult terrains or high-risk zones.

Welfare Packages including medical care, insurance, and improved accommodation for families.

The Nigerian Army noted that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has initiated direct engagements with federal authorities to ensure that welfare reforms are not just reactive, but periodic and structured.

"The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently demonstrated commitment to the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Attempts to portray the institution as unstable are irresponsible” Anele said.

The Army reiterated that soldiers are trained to utilize established military procedures for grievances. Unlike civilian platforms, the military operates on a strictly hierarchical feedback system designed to maintain order while addressing the needs of personnel.
