Navy, Chevron Alliance Deepens as Western Naval Command Strengthens Maritime Security Ties
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strategic partnerships as he paid a courtesy visit to Chevron Nigeria Limited, aimed at boosting maritime security and strengthening civil-military relations.
During the visit, Rear Admiral Mustapha underscored the critical role of the Western Naval Command in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, particularly within the busy coastal corridors of Lagos. He emphasized that collaboration with key stakeholders such as Chevron remains vital in tackling maritime threats and ensuring the safety of offshore assets.
Highlighting advancements in surveillance, the FOC pointed to the effectiveness of Maritime Domain Awareness platforms like Falcon Eye and the Regional Maritime Awareness Capability (RMAC), noting that these systems have significantly enhanced the Navy’s capacity to detect and respond swiftly to security challenges.
He also called for deeper collaboration in driving Nigeria’s technological growth, advocating for the adoption of modern systems, capacity building, and knowledge transfer to strengthen indigenous capabilities within the maritime sector.
As part of the engagement, the Commanding Officer of NNS Centenary delivered a lecture titled “Nigerian Navy and Chevron Nigeria Limited Operations: An Appraisal,” providing insights into existing cooperation and identifying areas for improvement. The session was followed by a robust interactive engagement, with participants contributing both physically and virtually.
In his remarks, the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Jim Swartz, commended the Nigerian Navy for its unwavering dedication to securing the maritime environment. He noted that the improved security landscape has had a positive impact on the company’s operations and reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safety, technological advancement, and sustainable partnerships.
The visit concluded with both parties reaffirming their shared resolve to deepen collaboration in ensuring a secure maritime environment that supports economic growth and national development.
