Lagos Unleashes AI-Driven Training for Education Transformation

The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to reposition its education sector for the future with the rollout of a three-day capacity-building programme on digital pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for secondary school teachers across the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), is designed to equip selected teachers from the six education districts and the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) with cutting-edge digital teaching skills.

Declaring the workshop open at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Hall, the Commissioner

for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the training as both strategic and overdue, given the rapid evolution of education driven by technology.

He urged participants to integrate digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence, and problem-solving techniques into their teaching methods, stressing that continuous learning is essential for educators to remain effective and relevant.

According to him, “The education landscape is constantly evolving, and teachers must stay updated with modern strategies that promote creativity, productivity, and respect in the classroom.”

Alli-Balogun noted that the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, particularly its focus on Education and Technology, and commended the Governor’s sustained investment in capacity development for teachers.

In her welcome address, the Chairman of TESCOM, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, highlighted that digital pedagogy represents a shift from traditional teacher-centred instruction to a more engaging, learner-centred approach.

She explained that the training is aimed at enhancing teachers’ creative thinking and encouraging the adoption of innovative teaching strategies that will improve student outcomes

Peregrino urged participants to maximise the opportunity, embrace new methodologies, and remain mindful of ethical considerations such as responsible use of technology and data privacy.

“You are agents of change. Ensure that the knowledge acquired here extends beyond this training by sharing it with colleagues and applying it effectively in your classrooms,” she said.

She further emphasised that Artificial Intelligence should be seen as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for teachers, noting that educators remain central to the learning process.

The workshop, themed “Digital Pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teachers on GLs 15–17,” commenced on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and is expected to conclude on Friday, April 10, 2026, with a communiqué.
