Ikorodu Traffic Incident: Lagos Police Clarify Viral Video, Driver Remanded

The Lagos State Police Command has provided an official account of the incident at Ikorodu, which recently went viral online. The event involved a traffic offender clashing with Task Force officers during a routine enforcement operation.

According to Commissioner of Police, CP, Olohundare Jimoh, around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, March 16, 2026, officers on traffic duty along Mile 12 intercepted a vehicle that made an illegal turn and drove against traffic. In an attempt to evade arrest, the driver reversed into an oncoming commercial minibus, causing damage and endangering other road users.

“The driver and his vehicle were handed over to the Lagos State Task Force for further investigation. The damaged minibus was taken to the Task Force office in Oshodi, while the suspect’s car was moved to Alausa”

“The driver resisted officers and blocked traffic, leading to a temporary gridlock. In the process of restoring order, Task Force personnel used minimal force to remove him from the roadway”

“Preliminary reports also indicate that the suspect encouraged bystanders to confront the officers, resulting in a brief mob attack and stones being thrown at the police”

“The viral video circulating online, police emphasized, was recorded by the suspect during his transport to Alausa and does not reflect the full context of the incident” CP, Jimoh stated.

He said the driver, identified as Lateef Adeyemo, was arraigned at a mobile court in Oshodi on five charges, including conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace; driving against traffic; obstruction of public officers; malicious damage and violation of traffic laws.

He was remanded in custody after failing to meet bail requirements.

The Lagos State Police reminded the public that driving against traffic is prohibited under Part III, Schedule 1, Item 27 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2018, punishable by up to one year in prison and potential vehicle forfeiture.

The Command urged motorists to comply with traffic rules, cooperate with law enforcement, and avoid sharing misleading content that could misrepresent events. Authorities emphasized that all violators of the law will be held accountable, and officers will continue to enforce regulations without intimidation.

Agencies including the LAMATA, Rapid Response Squad, and the Eko Strike Force were cited as key partners ensuring road safety and order in Lagos.
