Zamfara Assembly Suspends Two Council Chairmen Over Alleged Financial Irregularities
The Zamfara State House of Assembly has suspended two local government chairmen as part of ongoing efforts to enforce accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Assembly’s spokesperson, Bello Madaro Kurya, who said the move followed concerns over alleged financial misconduct at the council level.
Those affected are Mannir Mu’azu Haidara of Kaura Namoda Local Government Council and Umar A. Faru of Bukkuyum Local Government Council.
According to the statement, the suspension stems from the consideration of a report presented during plenary by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The report was delivered by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as the committee’s vice chairman.
The report is part of a broader investigation into the financial activities of all 14 local government councils in the state for the 2025 fiscal year.
Lawmakers noted that the suspended chairmen failed to honour invitations from the committee, which were issued to allow them clarify how funds allocated to their councils were utilised.
Following deliberations presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, the Assembly unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations, approving the immediate suspension of the two officials pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Assembly directed the affected chairmen to hand over leadership of their councils to their respective vice chairmen without delay.
It also cited disregard for legislative authority, alongside concerns over transparency and accountability, as key reasons for the action.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to promoting prudent management of public resources and strengthening good governance, noting that its resolutions have been forwarded to the state executive for implementation.
Efforts to obtain reactions from the suspended officials were unsuccessful, as they could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
