“No Officer Is Above the Law” — IGP Tunji Disu Declares Zero Tolerance for Corruption, Abuse of Power

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has declared that misconduct, abuse of power, corruption, extortion, unlawful arrest, and illegal detention will no longer be tolerated within the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership.

Speaking during his inaugural conference with strategic police managers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, the police chief warned that the era of “business as usual” in the Force is over.

Disu made it clear that no officer, regardless of rank or position, will be shielded from accountability, stressing that the police must remain committed to professionalism and respect for the rule of law.

“The Nigeria Police Force is, first and foremost, the people’s police,” he said. “Every Nigerian, irrespective of status, belief, or background, must be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.”

According to the IGP, even isolated cases of misconduct can damage the credibility of the entire Force and erode public trust. He therefore warned that any officer found engaging in corruption, extortion, abuse of authority, or unlawful detention will face strict disciplinary action.

To reinforce internal discipline, Disu announced plans to strengthen accountability units within the Force, including the Provost Department, the Complaints Response Unit, and the X-Squad. He explained that these units will be empowered to independently investigate allegations of misconduct without interference.

The police boss also emphasized that loyalty to the institution should not translate into protecting erring officers, noting that those found culpable will face sanctions ranging from dismissal to prosecution.

Disu urged senior officers to lead by example, stressing that authority must be exercised with restraint, fairness, and sound judgment. He described respect for human rights as a fundamental pillar of professional policing and essential to rebuilding public confidence.

He further revealed that the Force has commenced a comprehensive review of its recruitment process to ensure that only individuals of sound character and competence are enlisted.

Disu was appointed Acting IGP by Bola Tinubu in February 2026 before his subsequent confirmation as the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.
