NNPP Leadership Crisis: National Chairman Rejects Obasanjo’s Obi-Kwankwaso Joint Ticket Proposal

The internal crisis within the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) reached a boiling point today as the National Chairman,Dr. Agbo Major, issued a scathing disclaimer regarding the rumored 2027 joint presidential ticket between Mr. Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The statement, aimed at reports suggesting former President Olusegun Obasanjo is brokering a deal between the two political figures, described Kwankwaso as a “general without troops” and warned Peter Obi against compromising the integrity of the Obidient Movement.

The “Kano Illusion” claims of political decline, Dr. Agbo Major dismissed the Kwankwasiyya movement’s projection of one million votes in Kano State for 2027 as “imaginary and deceptive.” He asserted that Senator Kwankwaso has lost his organic base due to a mass exodus of key allies.

The Chairman listed strategic figures who have reportedly decamped to the APC, including Senator Sumaila Kawu, Hon. Ali Madaki, and Baffa Bichi, among others.

The statement declared Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the current de facto leader of the NNPP, being the highest-ranking elected official, effectively displacing Kwankwaso.

A critical highlight of the press release is the reminder of Kwankwaso’s legal status within the party.

Dr. Major cited 2025 High Court judgments from Abia and the FCT which confirmed the expulsion of Senator Kwankwaso from the NNPP.

The NNPP Chairman warned Peter Obi that any attempt by the duo to use the NNPP as a “Plan B” (should they fail to secure the ADC primary) would be resisted.

”We advise Mr. Peter Obi to stay away from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, his experience and travails while in NNPP is just a tip of the iceberg and a warning for him to operate with people honestly and decently.”Dr. Agbo Major.

The statement revisited the failed 2023 alliance, blaming Kwankwaso’s “inferiority complex” and Peter Obi’s failure to engage directly with the NNPP Founder and BoT Chairman, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, for the missed opportunity that “dashed the desires of Nigerians.”
