WAEC elects new vice chairman, raises alarm over exam malpractice in West Africa
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has elected Professor Ernest Kofi Davis as its new Vice Chairman following the conclusion of its 74th Annual Council Meeting held in Accra, Ghana.
Davis, Ghana’s Chief Government Nominee on Council, succeeds Liberia’s Honourable Amos Armah Fully and will serve a one-year tenure.
The meeting, which held from March 24 to 28, 2026, was declared open by Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, represented by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
In his keynote address, Mahama described WAEC as one of Africa’s most successful regional institutions, commending member countries for sustaining its credibility over the years.
He, however, raised concerns over the increasing rate of examination malpractice and certificate fraud, warning that the trend poses a serious threat to the integrity of the Council’s examinations.
The President called on stakeholders across the sub-region to take collective responsibility in protecting the credibility of public examinations.
Also speaking, Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, represented by Deputy Minister Dr. Clement A. Apaak, highlighted the role of examinations in human capital development.
He disclosed that Ghana has reinstated its participation in the international version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, beginning from 2026.
At the meeting, WAEC honoured three Ghanaian students for outstanding performance in the 2025 WASSCE. Miss Huda Suglo Suleman emerged the overall best candidate in West Africa, clinching both the WAEC International Excellence Award (first prize) and the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award.
Other awardees were Miss Paula Adzo Elinam Suwo (second prize) and Miss Matthea Aba Andoh (third prize), selected from over 2.6 million candidates across member countries.
The Council also conferred its Distinguished Friend of Council Award on Professor William Afiakwa Asomaning for his contributions to the organisation.
Delegates at the meeting reviewed WAEC’s operations, ratified committee decisions, and adopted the Registrar’s Annual Report for the 2025/2026 period.
The 75th Annual Council Meeting is scheduled to hold in Nigeria in March 2027.
