Bandits Storm Akure Airport Runway, Four Arrested as Security Forces Move In
Four suspected bandits were apprehended on Sunday evening after reportedly gaining access to the runway area of
Akure Airport, prompting a rapid response from multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian Air Force ( NAF) and the Amotekun Corps.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the suspects were said to have chased farmers from nearby farmlands toward the airport’s runway, an action that quickly caught the attention of air traffic controllers monitoring activities from the control tower.
An air traffic controller, who preferred not to be named, described the situation as a serious security threat, noting that the sighting of armed individuals near the runway raised concerns for both personnel safety and flight operations.
The development led to an urgent call for intervention by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with requests for tighter security around the airport facility.
A FAAN official disclosed that aviation security personnel were immediately alerted, while the Air Force and other security operatives were mobilized to comb surrounding bushes and forest areas near the airport. The operation led to the arrest of four suspects, who were later taken into custody by officers of the Nigeria Police Force alongside members of the Amotekun Corps.
Security sources said the suspects were first spotted behind the airport perimeter near Eleyewo community, which prompted Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers and other operatives to begin a pursuit.
Witnesses reported that a woman and several young men were seen running from nearby farms toward the runway while calling for help after noticing armed men on motorcycles allegedly chasing them. Security personnel quickly responded, setting up an ambush that resulted in the suspects’ arrest.
Reacting to the incident, FAAN Managing Director,
Olubunmi Kuku stated that the situation highlights the need for stronger perimeter protection at airports across the country.
She explained that the Federal Government has already accelerated plans to install modern operational and perimeter fencing at airports nationwide to prevent unauthorized access and enhance safety.
According to her, the move forms part of ongoing efforts by the President and the Minister of Aviation to strengthen security infrastructure at critical aviation facilities.
