Nestlé Nigeria Clarifies: Infant Formula Sold Locally Not Part of Global Voluntary Recall

Nestlé Nigeria PLC has issued an official statement to reassure parents and caregivers that its infant formula products are not affected by the ongoing voluntary and precautionary recall of specific batches reported in other countries. 

The clarification comes as a proactive measure to address concerns following the widening of a global recall linked to potential cereulide toxin contamination which has impacted at least 60 countries across Europe, the Americas, and parts of Africa, including South Africa.

In a statement signed by Toju Egbebi, Corporate Affairs Manager for Nestlé Nigeria PLC, the company emphasized that all locally available products are fully compliant with national safety standards.

All Nestlé infant formula products sold in Nigeria are officially registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and are not part of the affected international batches.

While the global recall includes specific batches of brands like SMA, NAN, and Alfamino, Nestlé Nigeria confirms that the local supply chain for these ranges remains secure and safe for consumption.

The company specifically identified the following product ranges as fully safe for infants: SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2, and SMA Gold 3.

 NAN Optipro 1, NAN Optipro 2, and NAN Optipro 3.

The international recall, which began in early January 2026, was triggered by the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-stable toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria. The contamination was traced to an ingredient (arachidonic acid oil) provided by a third-party supplier.

Symptoms of cereulide exposure include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. However, Nestlé Nigeria has reiterated that no such contaminated batches were distributed within the Nigerian market.
