NAFDAC Debunks Viral Claim on Ban of Antimalarial Drugs, Warns Against Misinformation
Nigeria’s drug regulatory body, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has dismissed a viral message circulating on social media which alleged that some commonly used antimalarial medicines have been banned in the country.
The agency described the claim as false and misleading, explaining that the message, shared alongside a photo of various paediatric antimalarial suspensions, wrongly advised Nigerians to alert their relatives about a supposed ban on the products.
According to NAFDAC, there is no blanket prohibition on the medicines listed in the viral post, stressing that the spread of unverified information could create unnecessary fear and interfere with access to essential treatments.
The agency explained that all pharmaceutical products distributed in Nigeria must pass through strict regulatory procedures, including product registration, laboratory quality checks, and continuous post-market monitoring to ensure safety for consumers.
NAFDAC added that whenever any medicine is found to be unsafe, substandard, or unregistered, the public is formally notified through official statements and regulatory alerts, not through unofficial social media messages.
The agency advised Nigerians to rely only on information released through its verified communication channels and other recognised health authorities. Consumers were also encouraged to check NAFDAC registration numbers on medicines and report any suspicious products to the agency.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting public health, NAFDAC warned that misinformation about vital treatments such as antimalarial drugs could pose serious risks, particularly to vulnerable groups, including children.
