LASG resolves decade-long land dispute in Okun-Ajah, Mayegun, benefits over 200 allotteestrate

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has successfully resolved a land dispute that spanned over a decade in the Okun-Ajah and Mayegun communities, benefiting over 200 allottees.

Speaking at a ministerial press briefing on Monday the Honourable Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, attributed the peaceful and lawful resolution to the visionary leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The dispute had threatened the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of residents within State Government schemes.

Alebiosu stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to governance with a human face was the driving force behind a groundbreaking regularisation process that prevented the eviction and property loss of over 200 allottees.

“What we have achieved here is a testament to Mr. Governor’s belief that governance must prioritize people, their dignity, their security, and their future. Rather than demolish homes and uproot lives, we brought stakeholders to a roundtable and crafted a legal pathway for regularising occupancy,” Alebiosu explained.

He noted that many affected individuals had unknowingly encroached on government land, leading to a protracted ownership conflict. Instead of mass demolitions, the State Government implemented an accommodation strategy allowing settlers to regularise their land documents and remain legally on the property.

Alebiosu emphasized the relief and deep appreciation of the allottees for Governor Sanwo-Olu’s thoughtful and compassionate leadership, which averted potential displacement, business destruction, and severe impact on livelihoods.

A beneficiary, Mr. Obasi, expressed his gratitude upon receiving his electronic survey copy, stating, “I want to sincerely thank the Lagos State Government for fulfilling this promise. Receiving my e-survey copy today gives me great joy and renewed confidence in the process. This means a lot to me and my family. Thank you!”

“This landmark resolution signifies a major victory for urban peacebuilding and reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu’s urban development agenda, which combines strategic planning with empathy”

“This isn’t just a resolution,” Alebiosu added. “It’s a message that in Lagos, people come first and that development will never come at the expense of humanity.”

The successful resolution is expected to set a new precedent for addressing land disputes and settlement issues in the state, reinforcing Lagos as a model of progressive urban governance in Nigeria.
