Time for Justice and Ife’s Turn to Lead, By Kehinde Olusoji

For decades, the dream of the Ife people in Osun State to occupy the governorship seat has been elusive. Despite their historical significance as the "Source of Yoruba Civilization," the Ife people have yet to lead the state since its creation. As the 2026 governorship race gathers momentum, calls for justice, fairness, and equity have taken center stage, with the Ife agenda becoming a rallying cry for power redistribution.

The demand for inclusivity is not just sentimental, it is constitutional. Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution emphasizes the need for equitable distribution of power to promote unity and national cohesion. Political analysts believe that the 2026 election presents a golden opportunity to address this imbalance, shifting focus from party loyalty and personal charisma to regional representation and fairness.

The Call for Equity and Justice

The Yoruba adage, "Oju kan kì í jẹ́ ilé ọba."

(The king’s palace is not meant for one lineage alone.) reminds us of the importance of fairness and justice in fostering harmony. For Osun State to thrive, all regions must have a chance to lead.

Osun State comprises four major ethnic groups—the Ifes, the Ijesas, the Oyos, and the Igbominas. The Ijesas have produced Rauf Aregbesola, while the Oyos have had Ademola Adeleke, the late Isiaka Adeleke, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Gboyega Oyetola. The Igbominas have also had a turn with Chief Bisi Akande. Only the Ife people remain unrepresented in the state’s top position, despite their significant contributions to Osun's socio-economic and cultural development.

Similarly, of the six geopolitical zones—Ede, Iwo, Ilesha, Ile-Ife, Osogbo, and Ikirun—only Ile-Ife, Iwo, and Osogbo are yet to produce a governor. The clamor for an Ife governor, therefore, is not just overdue but rooted in justice.
