GTCO Distributes 3000 Gas Cylinders To Ogun Communities, Transforms with Waste-for-Gas Initiative.

In a bid to enhance household welfare and promote environmental sustainability, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) PLC has launched its Waste-for-Gas Initiative in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The initiative, which took place over the weekend, saw over 3,000 residents receive a 3kg gas cylinder each, helping to reduce reliance on firewood and promote cleaner energy solutions.
Speaking about the initiative, Group Chief Executive Officer, GTCO PLC, Mr. Segun Agbaje, emphasized the company’s commitment to driving positive change beyond financial services.
“The Waste for Gas initiative is about making life easier for families, giving them more time to focus on important activities such as education, work, or personal development,” Agbaje stated.
“Beyond this, our goal is to continuously develop sustainable initiatives that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and contribute to socioeconomic growth.”
At the presentation event, GTCO’s Chief Communication Officer, Oyinade Adegite, highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative: fostering cleaner environments while enhancing household well-being.
She explained that GTCO carefully assessed beneficiaries’ needs to ensure the support reached the right people.
“We visited various households across the local government and were surprised to find that some residents had already gone borrowing from money lenders just to afford gas cylinders, while some others were considering doing the same,” Adegite revealed.
She further urged beneficiaries to use the gas cylinders as intended and not resell them, adding that GTCO will monitor the initiative’s impact before expanding the program.
Community Leaders and Residents Express Gratitude
Obafemi Owode Local Government Chairman, Ambassador Ogunsola Adesina, commended GTCO for the life-changing initiative and requested that the bank establish a physical branch within the community to alleviate residents’ banking challenges.
Similarly, Olu of Owode-Egba, Oba Kolawole Aremu Sowemimo, urged beneficiaries to retain and use their gas cookers responsibly, revealing that discussions were ongoing to introduce discounted gas refill stations within the area.
Adding her voice, Iyaloja General, Chief Ganiyat Oyelakin, emphasized the importance of gas safety, advising recipients to handle their new cookers carefully to prevent accidents.
Expressing appreciation, one of the beneficiaries, Madam Risikat Ayoka, shared her excitement.
“We are excited. This gesture will make us stop using firewood for cooking.”
Sustainability and Future Plans
GTCO’s Waste-for-Gas Initiative underscores the bank’s dedication to sustainable community development, ensuring that underserved populations benefit from cleaner, safer, and more affordable cooking alternatives.
The company has also hinted at a potential second phase, depending on how well the beneficiaries utilize the distributed gas cylinders.
